Kirkwood continues to grow in our partnerships with local ministries who meet the needs of our neighbors throughout the community. While we have partnered with some of the ministries for many years, we keep watch for new possible mission partners that meet the values of our church’s vision. Kirkwood has an active Mission Committee that prayerfully considers opportunities for our church family to experience our faith through missions and service.
The congregation participates in monthly goods collections.
Entering our Narthex, you will see a wicker trunk right inside the doors. This is no ordinary basket. This is one of the simplest ways that allows every person worshiping with us to become a missionary and share the love of Christ through our Mission Cart Collection. Every Sunday congregants are given the opportunity to donate items that meet the specific needs of a different local mission. While a particular month’s chosen organization may not tug on all hearts, Kirkwood’s Mission Committee is confident that by the end of the year, you will see a Mission Cart Collection for an organization that has special meaning for you. And you will find that the wish list for that organization includes something affordable that will allow you to be a missionary with us as we meet the needs of people we may never know personally. Month after month we deliver Kirkwood’s Mission Cart donations, which are often worth hundreds of our collective shopping dollars, to very appreciative mission partners. Maybe a single donation put in the cart is a pack of pencils or a toothbrush or cleaning supplies or a backpack. By the end of the month, all of our donations together reaffirm that we are committed to our community and to BE THE CHURCH!
The lists of the twelve organizations selected to be recipients of the Mission Cart Collections and of the needed items requested by each of these organizations can be found in the Mission Connections brochure provided in the pew pockets or on the Mission Collections card available in the Narthex. You can always contact the church office monthly for a list of needed items.
The following local groups represent the 2016 Mission Cart Collection recipients:
Kirkwood also collects aluminum can pop tops, which are delivered to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida. We also participate in the Box Tops for Education and the Labels for Education programs. Collection containers are available for participating box tops and food labels marked for dollars for education. Check your pantry and just deposit your labels and Kirkwood volunteers will trim, count, and deliver them to Sugg Middle School to help this neighborhood school earn equipment and supplies. These are easy ways you can be a missionary without having to travel beyond our church!
On Thursdays during the Season of Lent, groups set out to go to a different mission partner and offer time and manpower to meet whatever needs each of the five organizations identified as participants in our Significant Thursday program. One group painted porch walls, washed windows, floors and A/C vents. Another group deep cleaned a kitchen. Others sorted supplies and prepared packages for military troops. And yet another group read stories and played with children. Groups met in the church kitchen and prepared meals for our Pastoral Care team to take on their visitations with members at home. Our Significant Thursday experiences were so positive that the mission team decided to continue the effort by organizing more Significant Service Workdays. In 2016, Kirkwood sent 104 volunteers and logged almost 400 volunteer hours while participating in our Significant Service Workdays. Significant Service Workdays provide opportunities to share your time and talents. Our mission partners love seeing our groups coming to help, and members serving love making a difference!
Other Local Mission Opportunities:
Our Daily Bread volunteers serve once a month on the fourth Sunday. Sign up sheets are on the office counter.
Kirkwood collects, packs and delivers school supplies to each teacher at Sugg Middle School once each quarter during the school year. The Sugg staff are very appreciative of Kirkwood’s support of the needs of their students and love receiving Kirkwood’s donations.
Financial Support is provided through the General Operating Fund to:
Also, to support individual members in their mission initiatives, Kirkwood offers Mission Grants. Members apply for a grant to offset the expenses needed for their personal involvement in a mission ministry. A Mission Grant, when awarded, links a portion of our mission dollars to actual service by a member. And through that link, Kirkwood grows in our mission experience.
